Survivability
Experience will be your best ally when it comes to survivability. However it's important to regularly use your Barkskin on dangerous abilities or to just reduce damages taken. On all bosses, Barkskin can be useful. Dash can be used to reach a spot faster when you are late for some reason or just want to speed up the process. It allows you to move faster in general. This is usually an emergency way out if you fail at doing something.
Tuskarr's Vilality on boots is also an important enchant. You know how this game can sometimes be unforgiving and some millimeters can kill or save you. 18 spirit for something that can save your life is definitely worth the trade. Moreover, the faster you reach a spot, the faster you start healing again.
Keeping you alive is also really important. You always know if you are going to take damages and you are in the best position to know everything about you, your cooldowns, your healthstone, you positioning, etc. Other healers may not be aware of every possibilities you have. So keep in mind that you are the only one who knows the best way to keep you alive. It's always about reacting quickly without panicking.
Before the pull
There is no secret way or wonderful tricks but few little things that can help.
Be sure to stack up your Idol of the Black Willow before the pull by throwing some random Rejuvenation. Prehotting is sometimes a good way to start the fight with already constant healing. On Lana'thel you can cast some Regrowth everywhere to prehot people.
Prehotting the tank is also important on some fight. Once you got the buff from the Idol of the Black Willow, the perfect rotation would be:
- 3 Lifebloom
- Drink
- Regrowth
- Rejuvenation
- Lifebloom
- Engage and drink
The important element is the drink. If you don't drink before entering combat, it's only waste. Even if you missed the Rejuvenation or a Lifebloom, be sure to drink.
Focus target
Playing with Focus target is quite important on almost all bosses.
You will probably always have the boss on focus as you will be able to monitor his HP and see if you are good on mana. You will also be able to anticipate phase switch and possible important buff/debuff.
You will also be able to monitor important casts such as aoe Interrupt or damaging abilities. This will help a lot with pre-emptive healing. The most common use is when Dragons are breathing. They usually cast a 2s spell and you can precast a heal that will land just after the breath.
Focus target will also help to monitor tank switch if you missed a call. To do that you have to display the Focus target's target. It can be useful on Deathwhisper, Saurfang, Putricide, Sindragosa or even Lich King but on most bosses this is better to know when tank switch happens than to suddenly realize it.
There are other applications to the Focus target such as monitoring the Runic Power of Saurfang and intensify your healing while it grows or simply knowing the target of a boss ability.
Useful macro
The only macro I use is the instant heal one:
/cast Nature's Swiftness
/cast Healing Touch
You also have all the macro with Mouseover, which allow you to not target a unit to interact with it :
/cast [target=mouseover,help] spell; spell
